Servant Leadership and Moral Machines: An Ethical and Trust-Based Approach to Artificial IntelligenceAs AI agents increasingly participate as active members of hybrid teams, they can both create new opportunities and give rise to significant ethical and managerial challenges. Rule-based approaches to ethical AI can establish necessary minimum standards, but they lack enforcement mechanisms and do not consistently produce the desired ethical outcomes. In a world of autonomous AI agents, there is a pressing need for holistic ethical frameworks and leaders who act from clearly articulated and widely recognized ethical values. This article argues that a combination of comprehensive and robust ethical approaches, incorporating virtue ethics, and servant leadership provides a stronger foundation for responsible and innovative implementation of AI agents in organizations. Virtue ethics offers the actor-oriented perspective that rule-based approaches lack. Servant leadership operationalizes this foundation in practice through its documented orientation toward virtue and its demonstrated capacity to cultivate the institutional, relational, and moral trust that hybrid teams require. The article is conceptual in nature and draws on a review of three research traditions.
